Late night, August 16, so. of San Fran, the moon had a bright blue aura with a red line at its lower edge.????

Wednesday night, 8-16, around 11PM to midnight, in Menlo Park, CA, as I star gazed, I noticed the waning moon had a rather wide bright royal blue aura, topped with a thread of red, at its lower edge. A neighbor saw it as well so I know I wasn't seeing things. Anyone know what caused this phenomenon??? It was quite amazing and I've never before seen anything like it.

Thanks.

I'll take a wild guess...the aura was likely caused by haze and/or pollution, as noted by others. (That part of the guess isn't very wild.) The red thread may have been a jet contrail illuminated by city lights (specifically, the orange glow of sodium vapor lamps used along most major roadways these days). The alignment of the two phenomena was likely just a coincidence.
Reply:You are correct, the aura was not caused by haze and pollution...having just searched for information, I found they are caused by ice crystals high in the atmosphere...just like halos around the sun. Report It

Reply:have u taken a picture?
Reply:probably pollution.
Reply:"And there will be Signs in the Heavens" Pollution sounds like a likely source. Haven't you ever heard of a Blue Moon?
