Why were Northern Ireland wearing a blue strip when they played Denmark recently?

I know they it was an away strip, but why blue? Red, white (Northern Irish flag colours) or even green, I could understand. The Dutch wear orange (mostly), because its the colour of their royal family, but I can't see the relevance of blue to Northern Ireland.

G'day John M,

Thank you for your question.

Apparently, the Northern Ireland away strip is blue and white with black shorts. One reason is the connection with Scotland. Another is that other teams already had the more appropriate strips.

I have attached sources for your reference.
