I have royal blue living room walls w/white trim. Would a brown leather couch and red shag rug clash?

My walls are a royal blue with white trim. We have a light colored hardwood floor and were thinking about getting a dark brown leather sofa with nailhead trim. I am also eyeing a red shag rug to throw into the mix. It's not a bright bright red but not burgundy either. I was thinking about bringing these three colors together but don't know if it will clash. If it doesn't, where would I begin with curtains?? Solids, stripes, dots?? I want long curtains and my husband wants more of a cabin theme but I'm not sure that will work with this color scheme. Any help is appreciated.

The brown sofa would be fine, the red rug wouldn't go. I think the blue and the red together would clash.
Reply:I think if you go with a cranberry for the rug (like Carolina suggested) and match the curtains to that shade then your room would look edgy in a GREAT way.

I'm jealous ;)
Reply:Throwing a red rug in with blue walls is going to make your room very eclectic. It can work though. Maybe use the red rug as your focal point. Have your curtains match the rug with maybe some royal blue in your valance. If you want to incorporate the cabin theme, you can definitely do so with these colors. You can get alot of old-timey or rustic decor in red's and blue's. Maybe hang an old-fashioned quilt on a wall or I think this is really cool....

check out some other things on their website as well. They have lots of quilts you could use as wall hangings or just to drape over your couch.
Reply:The brown and the red are in conflict in my vision of what it would look like.
Reply:Forget the rug.

Priscilla curtains.

Solid.

Sofa? Check out all options.
Reply:Well to begin with, the room you've described does not fit into a cabin theme. Are you trying for Patriotic? I can't seem to get a good grasp on what you're going for. Red, white and blue together sounds a bit more contemporary and a more modern furniture design would be a better pick. The leather would work in a cabin look or for a more old world look. Hope this helped a little.
Reply:EGADS!!! do NOT use a dark brown sofa with that wall color!! it will clash terribly and get on your nerves after a while!! Why not try a sofa in another shade of blue; navy, possibly burgundy? anything in the cool tones, etc.?? the shag run would be ok with the blues...a cabin theme should be ok with your (new) sofa color...but in that case, the curtains should be short as he wants...for curtain colors, try a red close to the shag, or even go with orange/peach, etc. these are complimentary colors, I think.....check a color wheel to make sure!! this way your sofa/rugs/curtains will blend together instead of having the sofa stick out like a sore thumb!! email me if you have any further questions! good luck and have fun
Reply:I am old fashion lol. I believe if you like it then it does not clash. Your home belongs to you. If anyone says they do not like it or colors do not match then you really do not need to have them there.

I still believe a home needs to be lived in not just looked at.
Reply:The brown leather couch would look fantastic with your blue and white! Go for it!

As for the red rug (I'm assuming it's more of a dark cherry or cranberry red), it could look quite nice. As for curtains and other decorative objects, the new thing in decorating is to use the same colors but with lots of different patterns.

Here is a free virtual decorator you can use before you make any decisions on what to do with your colors. It's great and will really help you out. Don't worry that it's in French.... you only need to click on the objects in the room and the paint colors to change what you want.

Enjoy!
